About GBC

Grace Baptist Church started in Leyte Philippines by an American Missionary to the country, Pastor Leslie Funk. Brother Funk had started Bible Baptist Church  in the downtown area of Tacloban and it was sometime in the year 1977 that Pastor Funk felt that he is led to start a work at the edge of the town. It was in Marasbaras where he rented a small road-side building and then it was not long when he was led to purchase a property in a nearby area which now the Grace Baptist Church still stands. It was in Bañezville that the original L-Shape structure of the church was built and in 1978 the work was organized into a Church.

A couple of years, Pastor Funk's dear wife was found out to have cancer that made them to decide to go back to the United States for treatment. It was also that time when Pastor Howard Wynn and his family came to Tacloban, and he was voted to be the Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in the year 1980. Pastor Wynn had the chance to celebrate with the church on its second anniversary.

It was around two years later that the Grace Baptist Academy and Grace Baptist Bible College started. That time, a multi-purpose building was built at one end of the property and then a 350 square meters was also purchased at the back of the existing property. This multi-purpose building was later enclosed and is at present has turned into a fully-air-conditioned learning center for the Academy. It was also during those years that the inside of the existing buildings were remodelled and divided to meet the growing needs of the ministry.

The church started Faith Promise Missions giving. One thousand US dollars was promised the first year. Currently, our promise to missions is over $75,000. It was around ten or eleven years ago 450 square meters of property was purchased for building our new auditorium and Sunday School rooms. It is a two-storey complex and was built over a six year period of time by the funds from the faithful members of the grace Baptist Church. All the Sunday School rooms are also used for our Academy and now are completely air-conditioned. Recently, the church purchased a house and a lot right at the end of the existing property. It is going to be fixed to be used to house missionaries and guests of the Grace Baptist Church. More than two years ago, the church was also able to purchase 4 hectares of property at the north of Tacloban to build a youth camp site and now called Camp Victory. The construction of two dormitories in on progress and we thank the Lord for the fast development of the construction. Next year, we hope to host our first youth camp at the new facility.

God has blessed Grace Baptist Church. We have eleven directly sent out missionaries from the church. We also support almost thirty missionaries around the world. We have graduates from our academy and Bible College working around the world in various positions. At present, we have over twelve young men and several young ladies studying here in our Bible College who are ready and willing to serve the Lord wherever he would lead them. Our Academy is pushing the 200 mark in its enrolment and training young people for service around the world. Everything was achieved only by His grace and everything is done only for His glory.

To God be the glory, great things he has done!
